Cyclades Islands | Mykonos

Delos Archaeological Site & Museum

Despite its diminutive size, Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, and certainly the most important in the Cyclades. Delos was a place of such importance that the surrounding islands were known as the Cyclades, since it was thought that they lay in a circle round the island on which the Apollo-Sun, god of day light and Artemis-Moon, goddess of night light were born. The special importance of Delos is emphasized by the fact that, geographically, it lies on the straight line on which also Dodona, Delphi and the Acropolis Parthenon are!

Welcome to Delos!

Due to the sea water level rising or the island's level lowering (or both) we cannot be sure of the exact morphology of the island's harbor in antiquity. The general plan of the site, however, gives us good evidence to believe that today's port is part of one of the commercial ports in antiquity. The mole of today's port is made of debris from the excavations being performed by the French Archaeological School of Athens since 1873.

The queue can be very long. It is usually the moment one regrets for not having pre-booked a guided tour; the archaeological site is hopelessly huge and, to make things worse, guided tour participants get their entrance ticket directly, as such tickets are usually purchased in advance, so that visitors be able to follow their group guide without any delay!
