Samothraki ...more on Samothraki

... If you wish to climb to the top of Mt. Fengari (or Saos, it’s name in antiquity), you can start from Chora. It takes about 6 hours to climb to the top. As you can imagine, the view from the top is so outstanding that mere words fail to accurately describe it. Homer tells us that Poseidon once sat on its peak to observe the events of the Trojan War … that took place 200 kilometers away!

In addition to some very lovely villages on the island, such as Alonia, Profitis Ilias, and Lakoma, the hot springs at Loutra, in the north coast resort village of Therma, are of some interest for their curative, sulphur waters. Not far, however, is one of the loveliest spots on the island, the Gria Vathra Waterfall, a tranquil place of plane trees, a waterfall, and a naturally formed rock pool. If you continue further south along the east coast, you will come to the last accessible beach by land, Kipos, which is the Greek word for garden. Suitably named, this beach is framed by open green pasture and a lovely countryside. Of course, the most important attraction of the island is the Sanctuary of the Great Gods. Here you will find an excellent museum, which holds many artifacts recovered from the site. The site itself includes the ruins of the ancient stoa, the theatre, several buildings used for initiation rites and festivals, altars, and the often-photographed columns of one of the earlier and larger buildings used for initiation rites. The site is impressive and even more so when coupled with the natural surroundings of the area, the pine trees, and the magnificent view to the sea.
