Eratyra

Welcome to Eratyra!

Eratyra (formerly Selitsa) is built at the foot of Mount Siniatsiko, on the road between Kozani and Siatista. It was founded in the 16th century by refugees form western Macedonia for the same reasons as Siatista was founded. In the beginning of the 19th century, it was under direct control of Ali Pasha, ruler of Epirus. Its inhabitants made a living on farming, animal husbandry, tanning, vine cultivation and trade with Constantinople, the northern Balkans and central Europe. Wealth and inbound and outbound travel resulted in a rise of the cultural level, with the establishment of one of the first schools in the area and the building of churches and very well-designed mansions, some of which are still preserved. There are 23 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches and Monasteries in Eratyra, all of them very well preserved. The artistic wealth in the form of frescoes and Byzantine icons is free to all interested visitors to admire and appreciate.
