Kozani Archaeological Museum Ear-Rings

Welcome to Kozani!

The city of Kozani, capital of the Prefecture, is a typical provincial town, at an altitude of 710 meters (2130 feet) above sea level. It is inhabited by about 32,000 people.

The town is proud of its Kouventarios Municipal Library, which contains 69,000 volumes, some of them very old editions, plus a large number of manuscripts. There are also several Byzantine churches with beautiful frescoes and carved Iconostases. To the north of the town there is the Convent of Analipsis (=Ascension). The nuns residing there have excelled in producing fantastic embroideries, rugs and handmade textiles.

The city clock tower of Aghios Nikolaos (Mamatsios), built in 1916, is a city landmark and worth a look. The archaeological museum is in downtown Kozani, housed in an early 20th century building donated by the Municipality to the Archaeological Service. Unfortunately, it was rendered inoperative by the 1995 earthquake and has been under repair ever since. Among the items in provisional storage are finds from excavations in the whole of the prefecture. Inscriptions, statues, sculptures, figurines, clay vessels and jewelry of gold, silver and bronze, dating from the Prehistoric to Palaeo-Christian Ages, are all ready and waiting for the reopening of the museum.
