Poligiros Town

Welcome to Poligiros!

Poligiros is the capital of the Halkidiki Prefecture. The municipality of Poligiros is situated at the center of the peninsula of Halkidiki at the foot of mountain Cholomontas and at an altitude of 560 meters. Together with the settlements of Gerakini and Kalives, it has 5600 inhabitants.

According to the spoken local traditions, the town was situated at the location of Selio to the south of Poligiros, and it was moved to its present location to be protected from pirate raids. During the time of the turkish domination, it was the head village of the area and its local holiday is the 17th of May, the day when the Revolution of Halkidiki was declared in 1821.

The most favorable part of this fine town is the picturesque archaeological Museum, although most of the archaeological findings are kept in the Museum of Thessaloniki. Poligiros has many parks and picturesque squares like "Six Springs" and "Hero's Tomp." The old part of town, with constructions since the Turkish period, has been characterized as an "historic web." Another favorable site is the famous country church of Panagia and the mountain Tsoukalas, with it's panoramic views, which is situated one kilometer outside Poligiros.
