Welcome to Loutra!

This nearly empty village, with about 7 year-round residents, has one of the longest histories of any on the island, and is home to two of the best museums on Tinos. A Catholic village, it is the site of the Jesuit Monastery founded in 1661, and of the Ursuline Convent founded in 1862. The monastery houses a large and interesting folk museum, which displays a huge collection of old farm implements, olive presses, antique cameras, typewriters, silverware, irons, priest’s vestments, and other items too numerous to mention. From the courtyard entrance, the view down the valley toward the sea is outstanding, and, for walkers, there is a rough path that leads down to the plain of Komi.

The display at the Ursuline Convent depicts life at the school since it was founded, including classrooms, dormitories, and even the kitchen! It is an excellent exhibit that takes quite a bit of time to explore. Visitors to the exhibit are escorted by volunteers (mostly former students), so opening hours are limited; please check with us for the current schedule.
