Welcome to Livadia!

Livadia (pronounced Livathia, stressed on the last syllable, also spelled Levadeia or Levadia) is the capital city of Viotia, built between two hills making it very fertile, thanks to the abundant water in the region. In ancient times Livadia was known under the name of Mideia and was the site of the famous Oracle of Zeus Trofonios or Trophonios. Scholars have identified the location of the sanctuary of Zeus and the Oracle as being on Profitis llias. The two springs at the site of the oracle, known in mythology as Lethe (Forgetfulness) and Mnemosyne (Memory), they are still to be found in the south of the town, at a site known as Krya, a major tourist attraction in the city.

Livadia played an important role in the Revolution of 1821-28. One of the most well known Greek folk songs has it that "Forty young men from Livadia march to take part in Tripolitsa's siege..." which was the first organized war action against the Turkish rule during the national liberation war.

Being away from the sea, it is by no means a major tourist attraction, but anybody interested in the cultural excursions nearby, or its fantastic souvlaki made from local meat, can be decently accommodated in the local hotels.
