Drama City

Drama General View

Drama General View

Welcome to Drama!

The City of Drama is the administrative, economical and cultural center of one of the most unknown to the general public, though, perhaps, one of the most interesting Prefectures to visit. It is a city which offers a lot to the visitor, even during the long, generally boring, winter months.

Founded literally on water, Drama has the privilege of continuing a tradition which is lost in the beginning of History. The Aghia Varvara springs, forming a unique hydro-biotope in the heart of the city, the opportunities offered for accommodation, entertainment, eating and clubbing at affordable prices, the inhabitants of the city themselves, always being open-hearted and guest-friendly, the endless opportunities to all kinds of sports, all make Drama a very attractive destination.

The well organized local Museum gives the visitor the insight into the local History from its very first beginning (50,000 B.C.) to Drama’s liberation from the Turks in 1913. Very important “in situ” monuments are the Hellenistic tomb in Trias street, the imposing remnants of the medieval fortification of the city, the Aghia Sophia Temple of the same age, as well as the later-built Byzantine chapel of Pammegisti Taxiarhes. A lot of traditional buildings are preserved; the Tzimou Mansion (“Taxiarchia”), the ex- house of Pamboukas (“Archondiko”), and the ex-house of Anastasiadis (“Marmarino Spiti”= Marble House).

The Aghia Varvara Park, with facilities accommodated around the city's springs, is a rewarding entertainment spot, especially during the summer months. A site of special interest is the newly established “Park of the Statues” in the region of Diikitiriou, where there are on exhibit sculptures of Greek and International artists who have participated in the last two years’ “Cultural May” Events.
