Nostimo Village
Welcome to Nostimo!
Nostimo is a village in Western Macedonia, 25 km from Kastoria and 14 km from Argos Orestiko. There would be no reason to present this specific village had it not been the center of a big paleontological park and the base of a rich museum with finds from the Petrified forest displayed in it. As shown in our Album photos, petrified tree trunks are exhibited in the yard of a local building and a large room inside it has been turned into a Museum of Paleontology with fauna and flora fossils of both the marine and the land world. Tropical and subtropical plants (Palm trees mainly), having grown on alluvial deposits of the zone-sea of Tethys and covered by mud some 20 million years ago were petrified (fossilised). The fossils were found in excellent condition. Among the exhibits are oysters, shells and other marine invertebrates, the jaw of a 20 meter long shark and a tooth of a mastodont, ancestor of an elephant, 3,500,000 years old.
