Central Greece | Fokida | Delphi Town

Delphi Modern Town

Delphi Town today is a typical tourist destination. It offers a satisfactory level of accommodation and an architectural surrounding with both modern and traditional buildings. It is noteworthy that the whole of this town is new, as the historical Delphi village had to be transferred from its original location before excavations could begin, since it was built right on top of the archaeological site. It is inhabited by some 2500 permanent residents, but in the summer the numbers tend to grow. The site and the museum are rather extensive, and you must plan to spend at least one full day in order to enjoy your visit. Photos are unable to convey the awe that the location creates in the soul of the visitor. However, since a photo is the next best thing to actually being there, we have compiled an album for you to enjoy discovering “the tip of the iceberg.”

Delphi Vertical Street

Delphi Vertical Street

The town's road system consists of one main street parallel to the slope forking into two one-way streets and some vertical ones, going wildly downhill. Some more parallel short streets are opened where ever the landscape permits it.

Another picture which includes the missing, in the previous photo, two last symbols. Ancient Greek numbering used the 24 greek letters plus another three, today not used any longer: Stigma (or Digamma), Koppa and Sampi (or Sampsi). How these letters looked like is shown in the next photo.
