Churches of Galaxidi

Two are the most eminent churches of Galaxidi Town: St. Nicholas (Aghios Nikolaos) and St. Paraskevi (Aghia Paraskevi).

Aghios Nikolaos Church is much bigger than any other building in the town, and being on the top of the hill, as shown in our Galaxidi Port Album page, it dominates over the whole area. It was built to honor St Nicholas, protector of the sea-farers, at a point where there existed a sanctuary in the antiquity, a Byzantine church during medieval and post medieval times and a church during the Ottoman and Turkish rule. In 1800, the people of Galaxidi were given a special permit by Ali Pasha, the Turkish ruler of the region, to expand the small church on the spot. While works were still unfinished, the Greek National Revolution of 1821 broke out and Galaxidi was destroyed twice by the Turks. From 1827 to 1902, the people of Galaxidi, having gained their freedom, were able to fulfil their wish and finish building the Church.

Aghios Nikolaos has a wonderful and unique wood-carved iconostasis (Icon stand), i.e. the wooden icon screen with doors separating the main body of a Greek-Orthodox church (the Nave) from the Sanctuary (Altar). This iconostasis is well known throughout Greece as a masterpiece of sculpture.

The church of Aghia Paraskevi exists since at least 1667, when it was visited by a traveller who witnessed about it in his books. In 1847, it was rebuilt, but some of its early Christian building details were preserved. It is also famous for its calendar, carved on the marble floor by a local navigator and amateur astronomer in 1911. Each day, at noon, sunlight comes through a hole in the ceiling and, marking a round spot on the floor, it tells of which day of the year it is. Additionally, on the exterior southwest corner of the church there is a sun clock.
