Limenas Town
Welcome to Limenas!
The capital of the island, both in antiquity and in modern times, is called both Thassos and Limenas and is situated on the northeast coast of the island. It is the main port of the island and handles ferry traffic from Kavala and Keramoti on the mainland.
One of the most interesting things about the capital, beside its picturesque harbor, is that the modern town was built among the ruins of the ancient capital. You’ll find the ancient agora (marketplace), the Temple of Dionysos, and an old Byzantine church right within the confines of the town, with the four main gates right along the southern edge of town following the remains of the ancient walls that encircle it.
Within walking distance east of the town are the ancient theater, several shrines, and the acropolis. There is a very good Archaeological Museum in town, not far from the ancient harbor.
About a quarter of the island’s population lives in and around the bustling town, and it has an excellent tourist infrastructure with accommodation, restaurant, shops, and nightlife.
