Wild Flowers in the Geo-Park of Asproklissia

Driving along the uphill road to Skalochori and Nostimo villages we are sure to notice well-designed wooden signs welcoming the visitor to the Paleontological Park of Asproklissia, which is also the name of the nearby village. Theoretically this place, beautiful beyond description, is a walker's Paradize invitating to long promenades. The bad part is that it is also inviting to flocks of sheep and goats accompanied by shepherd dogs; the latter, as the place has become permanent grazing grounds, tend to grow aggressive towards any "intruder". Visitors are strongly advised to form small groups equipped with rattans which may turn out useful in more ways than one! Now that precautions have been taken we can safely enjoy our promenade, admiring the wild flowers and being enchanted by the bird chirp!

Asproklissia Paleontological Park: Informative Sign

Walking through the park, we met this info sign. Whatever finds are kept at the Nostimo museum, presented in our next page of this Album, so we were intrigued by just the beauty of the wild flowers in the park. We would appreciate any help we could get with their taxology and the onomatology of the species photographed.
The translation of the sign is as follows: With the term 'Petrified Forest' we describe an ecosystem of the past which, under special favorable conditions, it was petrified, i.e. the plant tissues were fossilized. According to professor in charge Evangelos Velitzelos the petrified forest of Orestida Community in the Prefecture of Kastoria was created during the Caenophytic Era (which started 65 million years ago and lasts until today).
The creation of the Petrified Forest is due to the volcanic activity of the region on a larger scale.
