Crete | Crete/Chania | Sfakia Region

Sfakia ...more on Sfakia.

Here you are mainly addressed as a person, as an honored guest, not as an exchange bearer!

People here make a living, a hard one maybe, in ways not necessarily crossing your path; they like to look you straight in the eyes! You discover the real meaning of the Greek word Symposium (drinking together and exchanging views) when, in a local, low-priced taverna, you find yourself drinking together with local people who treat you as a friend and spin a yarn or two for you. You forget about cardiac diseases while enjoying the Cretan Cuisine based on local olive oil, goat meat, and herbs and drinking the local Tsikoudia. You enjoy drinking water directly from the spring, and you understand why the Modern Greek word for water is “nero” short for “nearo” which means “fresh!” You will find yourself laughing out loud if later, back home, you are asked whether the beaches you swam at have been rewarded with the European Blue Flag! Our beaches here are not subject to measurements, they set the standards!

And then, there are the gorges! Samaria Gorge is the biggest in Europe, and there are many more, yet all fairly easy to cross seven months a year! Starting off from Chora Sfakion, the capital of the region, there are more than 20 hiking routes for you to follow, under the scrutinizing eye of some eagle! Or, if you like, the beach is across the street, 25 meters away! Or you may wish to explore the many small villages in the area while driving a rented car. Or you may wish to listen to local musicians play the Cretan Lyra, one of the most ancient instruments in Europe. Or you may even decide to spend the rest of your life here, as many former visitors have already done, and you will be very welcome to do so, surely finding friends to shake a firm hand over your decision.

Welcome back to Sfakia!
