Welcome to Kamena Vourla!
Driving up from Athens to Lamia, 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the capital, a couple of miles north of Aghios Konstantinos, we come to Kamena Vourla, a town lying between the National Road on the seafront and the nearby mountain. A detour, built in recent years, leaves this important Spa center a bit out of the way for travelers rushing to their next destination, but it would be rewardingly refreshing to drive along the seafront road and take a break at one of the many cafés lined up alongside.
Greenery, hotels (mainly, but not exclusively) targeting on summer Spa bathers, beaches in the vicinity, adequate infrastructure, make Kamena Vourla, together with Aedipsos on the coast of Evia across the strait, a thriving summer Spa resort. At the same time, Kamena Vourla is an ideal center for interesting excursions in the vicinity: the historic Monastery of “Metamorphosis tou Sotiros,” built in the 11th and 12th centuries A.D., celebrating on August 6th; and the Gorgopotamos Bridge, sabotaged in November 1942 by the Greek Resistance fighters, cutting off replenishment of ammunition and supplies to the Nazi forces fighting in Africa.
The nearby Leonidas Monument in Thermopylae is also a sightseeing excursion, as well as Karya, a traditional mountain village in the vicinity. Other interesting excursions include one to the nearby Spa center of Ypate, or the many daily trips to nearby Evia or the Sporades Islands.
