Santorini Traditional Tour by Coach

A superb visit to traditional villages, ending with Sunset in Oia!

Santorini Church

Santorini Church

Our first visit will be at the oldest church on the island, Panagia Episkopi, built during the rule of the Byzantine Emperor, Alexios Komninos, in the 11th Century AD. Next we'll visit Mesa Gonia – the “ghost” village that was deserted after the earthquake of 1956 and now it is rarely inhabited. We'll explore and photo some of the ruined houses and the old churches. Then we'll visit the beautiful traditional village of Pyrgos. A walk through its narrow, winding streets provides the opportunity to admire the traditional Cycladic architecture and the fine old houses; and to visit the Byzantine churches and the remains of the Venetian castle on the hilltop.

On our way to Oia, we'll stop at the idyllic village of Imerovigli. It is built along the edge of the caldera wall, at its highest point, from which you can enjoy the most wonderful view to the caldera. There we also find Skaros, a prominent craggy rock and remnant of the most important castle on the island. The capital of Santorini for many centuries, it was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1650 AD. Then we will follow the road, with its breathtaking views, to reach the traditional village of Oia.

The village is built along the rim of the caldera. The whitewashed houses, with arches and colorful doors and windows, are carved out of the cliffs, reminding one of eagles' nests. You will certainly enjoy the astonishing panoramic view of the caldera, the volcano, Thirassia island, and the rest of Santorini looking back toward Fira. Oia is famous as a gathering place for artists, whose works of art have been inspired by the beauty of the landscape, and many of which are exhibited in small galleries in the village. Oia is also known for its magnificent purple sunsets.

While the sun sinks into the sea, splendid colors spread throughout the sky, and serenity fills the heart. You can enjoy a drink on a terrace of a cozy cafe and gaze at the caldera as the sky changes colors. Fifteen minutes after the sunset, we'll return to the village square and board the bus for our return to your original departure point.
