Greek Gastronomy

We all know something about Greek food no matter where in the world we live.  Who hasn't tried feta cheese, a tyropita, some baklavas or enjoyed true Greek Kalamata olives.  Yet the Greek kitchen offers so much more...

...There are the traditional dishes cooked in every home and tend to vary slightly from region to region and island to island, you may have heard of Moussaka or Pastichio before.  Then there are the fast food items like tyropita (cheese pie), spanakopita (spinach & feta pie), gyro and souvlaki with many variations done with lamb, chicken or pork and your choice of toppings.  Greek gourmet cooking is absolutely astounding as the masters in our top restaurants are true artists that combine ancient with modern techniques and flavors that will tantalize your taste buds.  In Greece and especially on the Greek islands we have a vast array of fresh seafood and there is always a "catch of the day" on the menu.  Do try the calamari at the very least.  Finally, we shouldn't forget Mezedes.  The Greek word Mezedes literally translates to "appetizers" dining like this is similar to eating Spanish Tappas but with Greek dishes.  You would visit a special kind of restaurant called an Ouzeri or a Tsipouradiko (an ouzo or moonshine shop) and order dishes that will compliment your drinks.  We usually start with cold salads and then work our way up to hot dishes which are brought out at incredible speeds (fresh and hot ) and we all sample from the different plates as we sip our ouzo and enjoy our animated conversations.  In the more rural areas of Greece and on many of the islands, you will find that much of your meal has come from local gardens and local farms where there are free range, grazing animals.  The Greek people take much pride in their food, how it is prepared and freshness is of the utmost importance as well as using the best olive oil and local herbs and spices.  Enjoy every meal in Greece with a local or house wine or try our fantastic locally brewed beer.
